Chapter 9:Yudhishthira Performs Ashwamedha

steedSeveral months had passed and while Yudhishthira was devoting his time and focus on ruling his kingdom, in the back of his mind the guilt of the death of his family members in the Kurukshetra war was still eating him up.

Sage Vyas suggested he perform the Ashwamedha yagya. Krishna approved and everyone welcomed the idea of the yagya as it would give Yudhisthira something else to focus on. But he didn’t want any fighting. he asked Krishna if there was any way they could acquire wealth as he did not even want to collect wealth from the vassal kings as a tribute.   Krishna told them about a king in the north who had just performed a yagya and had left behind all necessary items and vessels to perform the yagya.

Using those items Yudhishthira was able to perform the yagya three times with Vyasa presiding over the rituals and Krishna as the honoured guest. Krishna spent some time with them after the yagya and then returned to Dwaraka with Arjuna.
